FESA Transfer

The Bachelor of Science in Fire and Emergency Services Administration is designed after a 2+2 degree completion model. Students are strongly encouraged to complete an associate's degree in fire science and transfer lower division coursework to Colorado State University. Students should plan to enter CSU with junior standing.

Colorado State awards transfer credits for college-level academic courses completed with a grade of "C-" or better at an institution accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations.  A maximum of 64 credits may be transferred by an accredited 2-year institution; there is not a credit limit on transferable coursework from accredited 4-year institutions.  More information on Colorado State transfer guidelines can be found at:  http://www.registrar.colostate.edu/transfer.

CSU has provided a website database of transfer credits from various colleges and universities. Please refer to the Course Applicability System (CAS) to determine if the class you have taken, or intend to take, will transfer.  You may also contact the Transfer Evaluation Office directly by calling (970) 491-7147.

Transferable Fire & Emergency Services Courses

Lower division courses taken in fire and emergency services disciplines may be transferred to Colorado State University.  CSU does not offer equivalent courses at the 100-200 level; these courses will be accepted as electives and cannot be substituted for upper division FESA courses.  Credit earned through a portfolio or articulation will not be granted transfer credit.

Some institutions offer upper division courses providing the same content, assessment, and student learning experiences as courses offered in the FESA program.  These courses must be from an accredited institution and will be evaluated on an individual basis.  Transfer courses that meet All University Core Curriculum (AUCC) Category 4 requirements must meet the exact content and assessment requirements as the substituted FESA courses.  The AUCC Category 4 courses for the FESA program are FESA 336, FESA 433, and FESA 467.

American Council on Education (ACE) Credits

Courses from non-accredited training organizations may be granted transfer credit if they are recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE).  The courses must carry a credit recommendation from ACE and be categorized as lower division, upper division, or graduate level.  CSU does not accept courses in the vocational category.

Training courses taken at the National Fire Academy (NFA), Emergency Management Institute (EMI), International Association of Firefighters, and a small number of state training agencies may be eligible for ACE credit.  These courses are listed in the current edition of the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.

An ACE transcript must be submitted for courses to be considered for transfer credit.  Copies of certificates earned will not be accepted.  Please visit the ACE website to request a transcript.

Students should note that the ACE evaluation process is rigorous and insures the continuous academic quality of the courses listed.  Many state and local agencies and private organizations often provide similar training with the same course names and seemingly same content and delivery.  These courses will not be considered for transfer credit unless they carry a credit recommendation from ACE.

Military Credit

Credit may be granted for courses taken at military training institutions if they carry a credit recommendation from the American Council on Education (ACE).  Courses accepted by ACE are listed in the current Guide to Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services.

Special procedures apply for the consideration of military credit.  Please contact the Degree and Transfer Office at (970) 491-7147 or visit the Registrar's Office website for more information.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is designed to allow students to receive college-level credit by examination.  Two types of exams are offered - the General Examinations and Subject Examinations.  Credit awarded for CLEP exams cannot be used to meet the Colorado State University resident instruction requirement.  Detailed CLEP information is available through the Registrar's Office.

General Examinations

The General Examinations measure college-level achievement in five basic areas of the liberal arts:  English composition, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social science/history.  Credit granted on the basis of the General Examinations will be treated as general elective transfer credit without a grade or equivalent course, and will count towards graduation requirements.  Credit granted cannot be used to meet the University composition or mathematics requirements.

Subject Examinations

The Subject Examinations measure achievement in specific college courses and are used to grant exemption from and credit for these courses.  Credit earned through Subject Exams may be used to fulfill AUCC Category 2 and 3 requirements.  Students who are enrolled in or who have successfully completed a course at a higher level may not receive credit for a lower level prerequisite.

Vocational/Technical Courses

Courses of a vocational/technical nature generally are not transferable.  Vocational/technical training is primarily skill based and is not considered academic learning.  Credit earned by articulation is not accepted in transfer to Colorado State.  Examples of non-transferable vocational courses are Firefighter I and II, Diver Operator, or Hazardous Materials training.

Colorado State University Courses

Courses taken in other disciplines at Colorado State University will be counted toward the total credit requirements for graduation.  Regardless of the number of credits completed, all FESA students are required to complete the FESA core curriculum (25 credits) and all University graduation requirements.

Second Bachelor's Candidates

Students who completed their first degree at an accredited institution will fulfill AUCC Category 1-3 requirements.  Category 4 requirements are included in the FESA core curriculum and must be completed for graduation.  In addition to these requirements, you must satisfy the following:

  1. A minimum of 30 semester credits "in residence" from Colorado State University, in addition to the minimum number of credits required for the first degree
  2. All curriculum requirements for the major (FESA curriculum = 25 credits).  Major requirements count towards the 30 "in residence" credit requirement.

Tentative Transcript Evaluations

You may request a tentative evaluation of your transfer credits by contacting Kelli Heenan, the FESA Key Advisor.  A tentative evaluation is not binding and may be subject to change.  An official transfer evaluation will be completed within 2-4 weeks of admission to Colorado State.

Your tentative evaluation may be done from unofficial transcripts.  To request a tentative evaluation mail, fax, or email a cover letter with your name, address, phone number, and email address to:

Transfer Equivalency

Colorado State has provided a website database of transfer courses from various colleges and universities.  The Course Applicability System (CAS) provides students information on course equivalency and applicability among participating institutions.  All public institutions in Colorado and Wyoming are included, as well as other selected institutions.  If a particular school is not listed, contact your advisor or the Transfer Evaluation Office at (970) 491-7147.

Transfer Appeals/Course Re-Evaluation

Students may request a re-evaluation of their transfer courses if they believe the content warrants a different course equivalency than the one provided through the initial transfer evaluation.

To request a course re-evaluation, contact the Transfer Evaluation Office at (970) 491-7147.  If the Transfer Evaluation Office is unable to re-evaluate the course, a written appeal is required.  The student is responsible for providing any supporting documentation from the transferring college, such as a syllabus or a more detailed course description.

Re-evaluation and appeal forms may be downloaded at:  http://core.colostate.edu/studentauccg.cfm.  Appeals should be submitted to the FESA Key Advisor for signatures and submission to the Vice Provost's office.  Appeal decisions will be mailed to the student within three weeks of submission.

Time Limitation on Credit

Courses completed within the preceding ten years may apply toward a bachelor's degree.  After ten years, coursework is reviewed by the department head and college dean to determine its appropriateness to the major requirements.
