ADMISSION FAQ'S

What are the requirements for admission?

Transfer applicants must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) to be considered for admission. However, applicants should have at least 13 semester credits and a 2.7 GPA to be considered strong candidates for admission.  Students with a GPA below 2.7 are advised to submit strong letters of recommendation and an essay with their admission packet.

Transfer students must also meet the University's mathematics admissions requirement.  Second bachelor's candidates/postgraduate applicants are exempt from the admission requirement in mathematics, though math courses may be required for graduation.

How do I apply for admission?
Applications for admission may be submitted online through the Office of Admissions.

The FESA degree is listed under "Online Degree Completion - Fire and Emergency Services Administration".  Applications and all supporting documents must be received by the deadline in order to be considered for admission.

What are the admissions deadlines?

Fall admission - July 1

Spring admission - December 1

Completed applications and all supporting materials must be received by the Office of Admissions by the posted deadline.

How do I apply for readmission to CSU?

If you were previously admitted to CSU and have been inactive for at least one fall or spring semester, you can reapply by submitting the Intent to Return Form.  You must also submit a $50 application fee (if inactive for one year or more) and official transcripts from all colleges attended SINCE attending CSU.

If you did not leave Colorado State in good academic standing, you must meet the requirements to return.  Probationary and dismissed students must restore their GPA to a 2.0 either prior to, or within their first two semesters back at CSU.  Students are advised to meet with the FESA Key Advisor to discuss their individual situation.

Detailed information for returning students is available on the Office of Admissions website.

What if I already have an Associates Degree?

If you have completed an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Sciences degree from an accredited Colorado community college, and it is the last school you attended, you will be admitted provided you have a cumulative 2.0 grade point average from ALL institutions attended and enrollment limitations have not been met. You will not be held to the university admissions requirement in mathematics.

Students with an Associate of Applied Sciences degree must meet the mathematics admissions requirement.

What if I earned my first Bachelors Degree at Colorado State?

You must apply for admission by the posted deadline dates if you wish to complete a second bachelors degree or Teacher Licensure, even if you will not be absent from the University between programs.

Please refer to the second bachelor's candidate FAQ on the Admissions website or contact the Office of Admissions for details.

What if I was conditionally admitted to CSU and did not meet the admission requirement in mathematics?

Students who were conditionally admitted between Fall 2000 and Spring 2003 without having satisfied the admission requirement in mathematics must have satisfied this requirement before they can return to Colorado State.

The two recommended options to satisfy this requirement are:

  • Attend another institution and complete intermediate algebra with a grade of "B-" or better, or a college-level mathematics course (e.g., college algebra) with a grade of "C-" or better,

OR

I've been admitted to CSU, what do I do next?

After you've been admitted to Colorado State, there are still a few important steps to complete:

Create an eID

To complete all the necessary steps for enrollment, admitted students must create an eID (electronic identity).  If you have not already done this, go to the eID website to complete this step.  You will need your CSU ID number to create your eID; refer to your admissions packet or contact the Office of Admissions.

Confirm your Intent to Enroll

Admitted students must confirm their intent to enroll by logging in to RAMweb.  Intent to enroll must be confirmed by June 1 for the fall semester or December 15 for the spring semester.  Students admitted after these dates or for the summer semester should confirm within two weeks of receiving their offer of admission.

Submit a Final, Official Transcript

Admission is provisional until a final, official transcript is received reflecting satisfactory completion of any work in progress.  Admitted students should submit a final transcript within three weeks of applicable degree/course completion or final term of attendance.

Please note that distance education students are not required to submit an enrollment deposit, apply for housing, or attend orientation activities.

What if I need to defer my admission to CSU?

If you have been admitted to Colorado State, but need to defer your admission to a later semester, you must contact the Office of Admissions as soon as possible.  Admissions can be reached at (970) 491-6909 or by email at admissions@colostate.edu.

TRANSFER FAQ'S

How many of my credits will transfer?

Colorado State will accept a maximum of 64 transfer credits from a 2-year institution.  An unlimited number of transferable credits may be accepted from a 4-year institution.  Vocational or articulated credits are not transferable to Colorado State.  A minimum grade of "C-" must be earned in order for a course to transfer.

Will my training/certification courses transfer?

Typically, training and certification courses are considered vocational credit and are not transferable to Colorado State University.  Courses taken through the National Fire Academy or Emergency Management Institute can be transferable if the course carries a credit recommendation from the American Council on Education (ACE).  Courses with a ACE vocational credit recommendation are not transferable.

Can I get a preliminary evaluation of my credits before I apply for admission?

You may request a tentative evaluation of your credits prior to starting the application process.  This service is offered in an effort to help you determine what and how previously taken credits will transfer.  Tentative evaluations are not binding and are subject to change.  Official transcript evaluations are done only after a student has been admitted to CSU.

To request a tentative evaluation, mail, fax, or email your unofficial transcripts and a cover letter including your name, address, phone number, and email to:

You may also utilize the Course Applicability System (CAS) to determine if your courses will transfer.

How will quarter credits transfer to CSU?

All transcripts documenting quarter credits will be converted to semester hours. For example, 1 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours. The Transfer Evaluation Office will review these courses to determine how many credits will be accepted in transfer.

How can I fulfill All University Core Curriculum requirements?

Students may fulfill outstanding AUCC requirements by taking courses at a local college or university.  You may complete these courses at another school while concurrently enrolled at Colorado State.  You are advised to complete these courses early in your academic career.  Consult the FESA Key Advisor to determine the transferability of specific courses.

Where can I take general education courses via distance education?

Colorado State University offers a limited number of distance education courses that meet All University Core Curriculum (AUCC) requirements. A current listing of distance education courses is available through the Division of Continuing Education

Distance education courses that meet AUCC requirements may also be available from the following.  These programs require you to pick a "host" school through which you will receive credit; you must submit a transcript to transfer any completed courses.

How long will it take me to earn my B.S. degree?

Students transferring from a 2-year institution will require a minimum of two years to complete a bachelor's degree. The amount of time required for students transferring from 4-year institutions will depend upon the total number of credits transferred.  All students must complete a minimum of 30 semester credits from Colorado State, and meet minimum graduation requirements.

The average FESA student enrolls in 6-9 credits per semester.  Taking class on a part-time basis will affect the amount of time required to complete the program.

How long will it take me to complete a second bachelor's degree?

Completing a second bachelor's degree will require at least two full-time semesters (full-time status is not required). Requirements for a second bachelor's degree include the following:

  1. A minimum of 30 semester credits "in residence" from CSU in addition to the minimum number of credits required for the first degree (typically 120)
  2. All curriculum requirements for the major including All-University Core Curriculum requirements

Students pursuing a second bachelor's degree in Fire and Emergency Services Administration must complete the FESA core curriculum (nine courses, 25 credits) and a minimum of 30 semester credits from Colorado State. The 25 FESA curriculum credits will count toward the 30 required CSU credits.

Students who completed their bachelor first degree at an accredited institution are considered to have fulfilled AUCC requirements for categories 1, 2, and 3.  Category 4 courses are included in the FESA core curriculum and must be completed for graduation.

What if I would like to appeal a transfer course or graduation requirement?

If you feel that a course you took should fulfill an AUCC category or you wish to appeal a graduation requirement, please refer to the following website for instructions and the appropriate form: http://www.core.colostate.edu/studentauccg.cfm.

Fill out the form and submit it for review and signatures to your advisor. It is suggested that you mail these appeal forms to preserve your original signature along with a stamped return envelope.
